(a) Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) classification of LDL,Total and HDL Cholesterol (mg/dl) :--
LDL Cholesterol
< 100 Optimum
100-129 Near or above optimum
130-159 Borderline high
160-189 High
>= 190 Very high
Total Cholesterol
< 200 Desirable
200-239 Borderline high
>= 240 High
HDL Cholesterol
< 40Low
>= 60 High
(b) Categories of Risk for LDL Cholesterol Goals :--
Risk Category LDL goals (mg/dl)
CHD and CHD risk equivalents < 100
Multiple (2+) risk factors < 130
0-1 risk factor < 160
(c) Major Risk Factors (Exclusive of LDL Cholesterol) :--
Cigarette smoking
Hypertension (BP >=140/90 mmHg or on Antihypertensive medication)
Low HDL cholesterol ( < 40 mg/dl)
Family history of premature CHD
Age (men >=45 years, women >=55 years)
American Diabetes Association (ADA) Guidelines
Diabetes Mellitus :- (any one of the following is diagnostic)
a) Classic symptoms of diabetes & casual plasma glucose concentration >=200 mg/dl
b) Fasting plasma glucose >=126 mg/dl
c) 2-hours postload plasma glucose concentration >=200 mg/dl during the OGTT
Impaired Fasting Glucose :-
Fasting plasma glucose between 110 and 125 mg/dl
Impaired Glucose Tolerance :-
Two criteria must be met :
(a) Fasting plasma glucose < 126 mg/dl
(b) 2-hours OGTT plasma glucose concentration is between 140 and 199 mg/dl
HbA1c Reference range :-
Normal healthy people : 4 - 6%
Good diabetic control : 6 - 7%
Fair diabetic control : 7 - 8%
Poor diabetic control : > 8%
